Overview

Garage 9 UltraCote® is a high tech polyester covering that features a unique multi temperature-controlled adhesive and shrinkage system, making it flexible and simple to use. A patented polymerizing process permanently fuses the color to the polyester film covering, getting rid of the possibilities of color-layer separation and permits rearranging the covering on your model. UltraCote's unique capability to both diminish and stretch make it remarkable to other coverings for walking around tight curves and wingtips.

Temp ranges are as follows:

Adhesion to wood begins at 200 to 220 degrees F.
Shrinkage start begins at 300 degrees F.
Maximum shrinkage is at 350 degrees F.

Surface area Preparation:

The covering job can only be as good as the finish of the surface area it's applied over. In order for the covering to effectively follow a surface, the surface area needs to first be smooth and clean. Sand the model using a sanding block and gradually finer sandpaper, with the final sanding being finished with 320 grit paper. Vacuum away all the dust, as specks of dust under the covering will leave undesirable bumps. Fill spaces and damages with a top quality filler. If using light-colored UltraCote® (such as white or yellow), use a tan-colored filler that matches the wood color to avoid the filler from showing through.

Pro Tip - Some professional home builders “raise the grain” then sand a 2nd time with 320 or 400 grit paper for the supreme finish. After the model is sanded, use a moist fabric to clean down the model. Some modelers choose to use a fine-mist squirt bottle filled with water to dampen the surface areas to be covered. As the surface area dries, anchored wood fibers in the surface area will “stand up.” When dry, sand the surface areas once again using 320 or 400 grit paper. Raising the grain now and sanding it off will avoid the grain from raising later on under the covering, producing a bumpy finish. Vacuum the model completely and avoid touching the model with oily hands.Your model is now all set for covering!

Trim Movie to Size:

Start by covering the bottom of one wing half. Using scissors or sharp pastime knife, cut a piece of UltraCote® a few inches bigger than had to cover the wing. Eliminate the backing (save for later on) and place the covering with the adhesive (dull) side down, focused over the wing. Set the covering iron to the application temperature level of 220°F.

Pro Tip - If the iron you're using does not show the real temperature level, here is a suggestion that will guarantee your iron is effectively set.Water boils at 212°F. Permit your iron to heat up at a medium setting. When the iron reaches its stabilized temperature level, carefully put a few drops of water on the iron's surface area. Adjust the temperature level until the water just begins to boil off. This technique is remarkably precise and is normally within 10° (of the exact application temperature level of 220).

Tacking Covering to Spar:

Tack the covering to the spar or the high point of the wing, using your iron as shown (an iron sock is highly recommened). Gently pull the covering toward the root and toward the pointer, as you work the iron from the center of the spar to the root and pointer of the wing. Press gently with the iron, allowing the heat (not pressure) to trigger the adhesive and bond the covering to the high point. Preferably, the covering will naturally lay flat versus the whole surface area with a minimum of wrinkles.

Covering a Solid-Sheeted Wing:

If covering a solid-sheeted wing, work from the center of the spar external to the routing edge and after that to the leading edge as shown, using the iron at 220°F. If a wrinkle develops, the covering can be carefully raised and reapplied.

Covering an Open-Structure Wing:

If covering an open-structure wing, work from the spar toward the routing edge, gently moving the iron (set at 220°) toward the routing edge with the iron getting in touch with two ribs. Using your iron, adhere the covering to the staying ribs, pursuing the pointer and the root. Now complete the open structure leading edge, using the same technique. If the leading edge is sheeted, then follow the method listed above under “Covering a Solid-Sheeted Wing.”

Sealing the Edges:

With the iron set to 220°F, seal the leading and routing edges. Using a straight edge and a sharp #11 pastime knife, carefully trim the excess covering from the leading and routing edge, allowing a minimum of a 1/4" overlap to twist around the leading and routing edge of the wing. Now seal the leading and routing edges firmly with the covering iron.

Wing Tip:

Depending on the quantity of the curvature of the wing pointer, high heat (as much as 350°F) may be had to diminish and stretch the covering to get rid of all the wrinkles. Preset the iron to 300°F. Pull and stretch the covering around the wing pointer while using heat with the iron. Remember, UltraCote® can be carefully raised and repositioned to help get rid of wrinkles. This feature is helpful, especially when covering greatly curved wing suggestions. Continue working, pulling, and warming the covering around the pointer until the covering is past the center of the pointer. It may be required to increase the temperature level of the iron to attain greater shrinkage to get rid of all wrinkles. Trim the excess covering using a #11 pastime knife, then reseal the covering on the wing pointer.

Pro Tip - If sealing the covering in tight locations such as corners or fillets, using the Hanger 9 ProTrim Sealing Tool is extremely helpful and leads to a professional finish.

Covering the Top of the Wing:

Using the backing from the wing panel that you just covered as a template, cut a piece of UltraCote® to be applied to the top of the wing.
