Overview

Garage 9 UltraCote® is a high tech polyester covering that includes a unique multi temperature-controlled adhesive and shrinkage system, making it versatile and simple to apply. A patented polymerizing process completely merges the color to the polyester movie covering, eliminating the possibilities of color-layer separation and permits rearranging the covering on your design. UltraCote's special ability to both shrink and extend make it exceptional to other coverings for walking around tight curves and wingtips.

Temperature ranges are as follows:

Adhesion to wood starts at 200 to 220 degrees F.
Shrinkage beginning starts at 300 degrees F.
Maximum shrinking is at 350 degrees F.

Surface area Preparation:

The covering job can just be as good as the surface of the surface area it's used over. In order for the covering to appropriately adhere to a surface, the surface area must first be smooth and clean. Sand the design utilizing a sanding block and gradually finer sandpaper, with the last sanding being done with 320 grit paper. Vacuum away all the dust, as specks of dust under the covering will leave unpleasant bumps. Fill spaces and damages with a premium filler. If utilizing light-colored UltraCote® (such as white or yellow), use a tan-colored filler that matches the wood color to prevent the filler from revealing through.

Pro Pointer - Some expert contractors “raise the grain” then sand a second time with 320 or 400 grit paper for the supreme surface. After the design is sanded, use a moist fabric to wipe down the design. Some modelers prefer to use a fine-mist squirt bottle filled with water to moisten the surfaces to be covered. As the surface area dries, anchored wood fibers in the surface area will “stand.” When dry, sand the surfaces again utilizing 320 or 400 grit paper. Raising the grain now and sanding it off will prevent the grain from raising later under the covering, producing a bumpy surface. Vacuum the design thoroughly and prevent touching the design with oily hands.Your design is now prepared for covering!

Trim Movie to Size:

Start by covering the bottom of one wing half. Utilizing scissors or sharp pastime knife, cut a piece of UltraCote® a few inches bigger than needed to cover the wing. Get rid of the backing (save for later) and position the covering with the adhesive (dull) side down, focused over the wing. Set the covering iron to the application temperature level of 220°F.

Pro Pointer - If the iron you're utilizing does not show the actual temperature level, here is a tip that will ensure your iron is appropriately set.Water boils at 212°F. Allow your iron to warm up at a medium setting. When the iron reaches its stabilized temperature level, thoroughly put a few drops of water on the iron's surface area. Change the temperature level until the water just starts to boil off. This method is remarkably precise and is typically within 10° (of the exact application temperature level of 220).

Tacking Covering to Spar:

Tack the covering to the spar or the high point of the wing, utilizing your iron as revealed (an iron sock is highly recommened). Carefully pull the covering towards the root and towards the tip, as you work the iron from the center of the spar to the root and tip of the wing. Press gently with the iron, enabling the heat (not pressure) to trigger the adhesive and bond the covering to the high point. Preferably, the covering will naturally lay flat against the entire surface area with a minimum of wrinkles.

Covering a Solid-Sheeted Wing:

If covering a solid-sheeted wing, work from the center of the spar outward to the trailing edge and after that to the cutting edge as revealed, utilizing the iron at 220°F. If a wrinkle establishes, the covering can be thoroughly lifted and reapplied.

Covering an Open-Structure Wing:

If covering an open-structure wing, work from the spar towards the trailing edge, gently moving the iron (set at 220°) towards the trailing edge with the iron calling two ribs. Utilizing your iron, adhere the covering to the staying ribs, working toward the tip and the root. Now complete the open structure leading edge, utilizing the exact same method. If the leading edge is sheeted, then follow the strategy listed above under “Covering a Solid-Sheeted Wing.”

Sealing the Edges:

With the iron set to 220°F, seal the leading and trailing edges. Utilizing a straight edge and a sharp #11 pastime knife, thoroughly cut the excess covering from the leading and trailing edge, enabling a minimum of a 1/4" overlap to twist around the leading and trailing edge of the wing. Now seal the leading and trailing edges securely with the covering iron.

Wing Pointer:

Depending on the quantity of the curvature of the wing tip, high heat (as much as 350°F) may be needed to shrink and extend the covering to get rid of all the wrinkles. Preset the iron to 300°F. Pull and extend the covering around the wing tip while applying heat with the iron. Keep in mind, UltraCote® can be thoroughly lifted and rearranged to help get rid of wrinkles. This feature is advantageous, especially when covering greatly curved wing ideas. Continue working, pulling, and heating the covering around the tip until the covering is past the center of the tip. It may be essential to increase the temperature level of the iron to accomplish greater shrinking to get rid of all wrinkles. Cut the excess covering utilizing a #11 pastime knife, then reseal the covering on the wing tip.

Pro Pointer - If sealing the covering in tight locations such as corners or fillets, utilizing the Wall mount 9 ProTrim Sealing To
