Overview

Hangar 9 UltraCote® is a high technology polyester covering that features a unique multi temperature-controlled adhesive and shrinkage system, making it flexible and simple to apply. A patented polymerizing process permanently merges the color to the polyester film covering, removing the possibilities of color-layer separation and permits rearranging the covering on your design. UltraCote's unique ability to both shrink and extend make it remarkable to other coverings for walking around tight curves and wingtips.

Temp ranges are as follows:

Adhesion to wood begins at 200 to 220 degrees F.
Shrinking beginning begins at 300 degrees F.
Maximum shrinkage is at 350 degrees F.

Surface Preparation:

The covering job can just be as excellent as the surface of the surface it's used over. In order for the covering to appropriately stick to a surface area, the surface must initially be smooth and clean. Sand the design using a sanding block and gradually finer sandpaper, with the final sanding being done with 320 grit paper. Vacuum away all the dust, as specks of dust under the covering will leave undesirable bumps. Fill gaps and damages with a premium filler. If using light-colored UltraCote® (such as white or yellow), use a tan-colored filler that matches the wood color to prevent the filler from showing through.

Pro Pointer - Some expert home builders “raise the grain” then sand a 2nd time with 320 or 400 grit paper for the supreme surface. After the design is sanded, use a wet cloth to clean down the design. Some modelers prefer to use a fine-mist squirt bottle filled with water to dampen the surface areas to be covered. As the surface dries, imbedded wood fibers in the surface will “stand.” When dry, sand the surface areas again using 320 or 400 grit paper. Raising the grain now and sanding it off will prevent the grain from raising later under the covering, developing a bumpy surface. Vacuum the design thoroughly and avoid touching the design with oily hands.Your design is now ready for covering!

Trim Film to Size:

Start by covering the bottom of one wing half. Using scissors or sharp hobby knife, cut a piece of UltraCote® a few inches larger than had to cover the wing. Remove the support (conserve for later) and position the covering with the adhesive (dull) side down, focused over the wing. Set the covering iron to the application temperature level of 220°F.

Pro Pointer - If the iron you're using does not show the real temperature level, here is a suggestion that will guarantee your iron is appropriately set.Water boils at 212°F. Permit your iron to heat up at a medium setting. When the iron reaches its supported temperature level, carefully put a few drops of water on the iron's surface. Change the temperature level till the water just begins to boil off. This approach is remarkably precise and is usually within 10° (of the precise application temperature level of 220).

Tacking Covering to Spar:

Tack the covering to the spar or the high point of the wing, using your iron as shown (an iron sock is extremely recommened). Carefully pull the covering toward the root and toward the pointer, as you work the iron from the center of the spar to the root and pointer of the wing. Press gently with the iron, allowing the heat (not pressure) to trigger the adhesive and bond the covering to the high point. Ideally, the covering will naturally lay flat against the entire surface with a minimum of wrinkles.

Covering a Solid-Sheeted Wing:

If covering a solid-sheeted wing, work from the center of the spar external to the tracking edge and after that to the leading edge as shown, using the iron at 220°F. If a wrinkle cultivates, the covering can be carefully lifted and reapplied.

Covering an Open-Structure Wing:

If covering an open-structure wing, work from the spar toward the tracking edge, gently moving the iron (set at 220°) toward the tracking edge with the iron getting in touch with two ribs. Using your iron, adhere the covering to the staying ribs, working toward the pointer and the root. Now finish the open structure leading edge, using the same approach. If the leading edge is sheeted, then follow the technique noted above under “Covering a Solid-Sheeted Wing.”

Sealing the Edges:

With the iron set to 220°F, seal the leading and tracking edges. Using a straight edge and a sharp #11 hobby knife, carefully cut the excess covering from the leading and tracking edge, allowing a minimum of a 1/4" overlap to twist around the leading and tracking edge of the wing. Now seal the leading and tracking edges securely with the covering iron.

Wing Pointer:

Depending upon the amount of the curvature of the wing pointer, high heat (as much as 350°F) might be had to shrink and extend the covering to get rid of all the wrinkles. Preset the iron to 300°F. Pull and extend the covering around the wing pointer while applying heat with the iron. Keep in mind, UltraCote® can be carefully lifted and repositioned to help get rid of wrinkles. This function is helpful, especially when covering dramatically curved wing pointers. Continue working, pulling, and heating up the covering around the pointer till the covering is past the center of the pointer. It might be necessary to increase the temperature level of the iron to achieve higher shrinkage to get rid of all wrinkles. Cut the excess covering using a #11 hobby knife, then reseal the covering on the wing pointer.

Pro Pointer - If sealing the covering in tight areas such as corners or fillets, using the Hanger 9 ProTrim Sealing To
