The 15th mission, San Juan Bautista was founded on June 24, 1797. It
includes the biggest mission church - and the just one with 3 aisles.
The area's Native Americans got along. Objective population quickly grew to
over 1,000. Dad Estevan Tapis developed a male choir, delighted in by the regional
population and visitors. Dad Felipe del Arroyo could preach in 7 Native
American dialects and developed the very first dictionary-like file of their
languages.
Mission San Juan Bautista has actually served mass daily given that 1797. Much of the
initial interior, painted by a Boston sailor called Thomas Doak, makes it through
today. The mission was restored in 1884 and once again in 1949, financed by the
Hearst Foundation.
