Summary

Hangar 9 UltraCote® is a high technology polyester covering that includes a unique multi temperature-controlled adhesive and shrinkage system, making it flexible and easy to apply. A patented polymerizing process permanently fuses the color to the polyester film covering, eliminating the possibilities of color-layer separation and permits rearranging the covering on your model. UltraCote's unique capability to both shrink and stretch make it remarkable to other coverings for going around tight curves and wingtips.

Temperature ranges are as follows:

Adhesion to wood begins at 200 to 220 degrees F.
Shrinking start begins at 300 degrees F.
Optimum shrinkage is at 350 degrees F.

Surface Preparation:

The covering job can just be as good as the finish of the surface area it's used over. In order for the covering to effectively adhere to a surface, the surface area should initially be smooth and clean. Sand the model using a sanding block and progressively finer sandpaper, with the final sanding being maded with 320 grit paper. Vacuum away all the dust, as specks of dust under the covering will leave unattractive bumps. Fill spaces and dents with a high-quality filler. If using light-colored UltraCote® (such as white or yellow), utilize a tan-colored filler that matches the wood color to avoid the filler from showing through.

Pro Suggestion - Some professional contractors “raise the grain” then sand a 2nd time with 320 or 400 grit paper for the supreme finish. After the model is sanded, utilize a moist cloth to wipe down the model. Some modelers choose to utilize a fine-mist squirt bottle filled with water to moisten the surface areas to be covered. As the surface area dries, inserted wood fibers in the surface area will “stand up.” When dry, sand the surface areas again using 320 or 400 grit paper. Raising the grain now and sanding it off will avoid the grain from raising later on under the covering, creating a bumpy finish. Vacuum the model completely and prevent touching the model with oily hands.Your model is now all set for covering!

Trim Movie to Size:

Start by covering the bottom of one wing half. Using scissors or sharp pastime knife, cut a piece of UltraCote® a few inches bigger than needed to cover the wing. Eliminate the support (save for later on) and put the covering with the adhesive (dull) side down, centered over the wing. Set the covering iron to the application temperature of 220°F.

Pro Suggestion - If the iron you're using does not show the actual temperature, here is an idea that will ensure your iron is effectively set.Water boils at 212°F. Enable your iron to warm up at a medium setting. When the iron reaches its supported temperature, carefully pour a few drops of water on the iron's surface area. Adjust the temperature up until the water just begins to boil off. This technique is surprisingly precise and is usually within 10° (of the exact application temperature of 220).

Tacking Covering to Spar:

Tack the covering to the spar or the peak of the wing, using your iron as shown (an iron sock is highly recommened). Carefully pull the covering towards the root and towards the pointer, as you work the iron from the center of the spar to the root and pointer of the wing. Press gently with the iron, permitting the heat (not pressure) to trigger the adhesive and bond the covering to the peak. Preferably, the covering will naturally lay flat versus the whole surface area with a minimum of wrinkles.

Covering a Solid-Sheeted Wing:

If covering a solid-sheeted wing, work from the center of the spar outside to the routing edge then to the cutting edge as shown, using the iron at 220°F. If a wrinkle establishes, the covering can be carefully lifted and reapplied.

Covering an Open-Structure Wing:

If covering an open-structure wing, work from the spar towards the routing edge, gently sliding the iron (set at 220°) towards the routing edge with the iron getting in touch with 2 ribs. Using your iron, adhere the covering to the remaining ribs, working toward the pointer and the root. Now complete the open structure leading edge, using the same technique. If the leading edge is sheeted, then follow the method noted above under “Covering a Solid-Sheeted Wing.”

Sealing the Edges:

With the iron set to 220°F, seal the leading and routing edges. Using a straight edge and a sharp #11 pastime knife, carefully cut the excess covering from the leading and routing edge, permitting a minimum of a 1/4" overlap to wrap around the leading and routing edge of the wing. Now seal the leading and routing edges safely with the covering iron.

Wing Suggestion:

Depending upon the amount of the curvature of the wing pointer, high heat (up to 350°F) might be needed to shrink and stretch the covering to get rid of all the wrinkles. Preset the iron to 300°F. Pull and stretch the covering around the wing pointer while using heat with the iron. Remember, UltraCote® can be carefully lifted and repositioned to assist get rid of wrinkles. This function is advantageous, particularly when covering sharply curved wing suggestions. Continue working, pulling, and warming the covering around the pointer up until the covering is past the center of the pointer. It might be necessary to increase the temperature of the iron to achieve greater shrinkage to get rid of all wrinkles. Cut the excess covering using a #11 pastime knife, then reseal the covering on the wing pointer.

Pro Suggestion - If sealing the covering in tight areas such as corners or fillets, using the Hanger 9 ProTrim Sealing To
