Introduction

Garage 9 UltraCote® is a high tech polyester covering that includes a unique multi temperature-controlled adhesive and shrinkage system, making it flexible and easy to use. A trademarked polymerizing process permanently merges the color to the polyester movie covering, getting rid of the possibilities of color-layer separation and permits repositioning the covering on your model. UltraCote's special capability to both shrink and extend make it remarkable to other coverings for going around tight curves and wingtips.

Temp ranges are as follows:

Adhesion to wood starts at 200 to 220 degrees F.
Shrinking onset starts at 300 degrees F.
Maximum shrinking is at 350 degrees F.

Surface Preparation:

The covering job can only be as excellent as the finish of the surface area it's applied over. In order for the covering to correctly adhere to a surface, the surface area must first be smooth and clean. Sand the model utilizing a sanding block and gradually finer sandpaper, with the final sanding being finished with 320 grit paper. Vacuum away all the dust, as specks of dust under the covering will leave unpleasant bumps. Fill gaps and dents with a top quality filler. If utilizing light-colored UltraCote® (such as white or yellow), use a tan-colored filler that matches the wood color to prevent the filler from revealing through.

Pro Idea - Some expert contractors “raise the grain” then sand a 2nd time with 320 or 400 grit paper for the supreme finish. After the model is sanded, use a moist cloth to clean down the model. Some modelers prefer to use a fine-mist squirt bottle filled with water to dampen the surface areas to be covered. As the surface area dries, anchored wood fibers in the surface area will “stand.” When dry, sand the surface areas once again utilizing 320 or 400 grit paper. Raising the grain now and sanding it off will prevent the grain from raising later under the covering, developing a bumpy finish. Vacuum the model completely and prevent touching the model with oily hands.Your model is now prepared for covering!

Trim Film to Size:

Start by covering the bottom of one wing half. Using scissors or sharp pastime knife, cut a piece of UltraCote® a few inches bigger than needed to cover the wing. Get rid of the support (save for later) and position the covering with the adhesive (dull) side down, centered over the wing. Set the covering iron to the application temperature level of 220°F.

Pro Idea - If the iron you're utilizing does not show the real temperature level, here is a tip that will ensure your iron is correctly set.Water boils at 212°F. Allow your iron to heat up at a medium setting. When the iron reaches its supported temperature level, carefully pour a few drops of water on the iron's surface area. Adjust the temperature level up until the water simply starts to boil off. This technique is surprisingly accurate and is generally within 10° (of the specific application temperature level of 220).

Adding Covering to Spar:

Tack the covering to the spar or the high point of the wing, utilizing your iron as shown (an iron sock is highly recommened). Gently pull the covering toward the root and toward the idea, as you work the iron from the center of the spar to the root and idea of the wing. Press carefully with the iron, allowing the heat (not pressure) to activate the adhesive and bond the covering to the high point. Preferably, the covering will naturally lay flat versus the whole surface area with a minimum of wrinkles.

Covering a Solid-Sheeted Wing:

If covering a solid-sheeted wing, work from the center of the spar outside to the trailing edge and then to the cutting edge as shown, utilizing the iron at 220°F. If a wrinkle develops, the covering can be carefully lifted and reapplied.

Covering an Open-Structure Wing:

If covering an open-structure wing, work from the spar toward the trailing edge, carefully sliding the iron (set at 220°) toward the trailing edge with the iron calling 2 ribs. Using your iron, adhere the covering to the staying ribs, pursuing the idea and the root. Now complete the open structure leading edge, utilizing the same technique. If the leading edge is sheeted, then follow the technique listed above under “Covering a Solid-Sheeted Wing.”

Sealing the Edges:

With the iron set to 220°F, seal the leading and trailing edges. Using a straight edge and a sharp #11 pastime knife, carefully trim the excess covering from the leading and trailing edge, allowing a minimum of a 1/4" overlap to wrap around the leading and trailing edge of the wing. Now seal the leading and trailing edges securely with the covering iron.

Wing Idea:

Depending on the amount of the curvature of the wing idea, high heat (approximately 350°F) may be needed to shrink and extend the covering to get rid of all the wrinkles. Preset the iron to 300°F. Pull and extend the covering around the wing idea while using heat with the iron. Keep in mind, UltraCote® can be carefully lifted and rearranged to help get rid of wrinkles. This feature is beneficial, particularly when covering sharply curved wing suggestions. Continue working, pulling, and warming the covering around the idea up until the covering is past the center of the idea. It may be necessary to increase the temperature level of the iron to attain higher shrinking to get rid of all wrinkles. Trim the excess covering utilizing a #11 pastime knife, then reseal the covering on the wing idea.

Pro Idea - If sealing the covering in tight locations such as corners or fillets, utilizing the Wall mount 9 ProTrim Sealing To
