Summary

Hangar 9 UltraCote® is a high tech polyester covering that includes a unique multi temperature-controlled adhesive and shrinkage system, making it versatile and easy to use. A patented polymerizing procedure completely merges the color to the polyester film covering, eliminating the possibilities of color-layer separation and allows repositioning the covering on your design. UltraCote's special capability to both shrink and stretch make it superior to other coverings for going around tight curves and wingtips.

Temperature varieties are as follows:

Adhesion to wood starts at 200 to 220 degrees F.
Shrinkage beginning starts at 300 degrees F.
Optimum shrinking is at 350 degrees F.

Surface Preparation:

The covering task can just be as excellent as the surface of the surface area it's used over. In order for the covering to properly follow a surface area, the surface area needs to first be smooth and tidy. Sand the design using a sanding block and progressively finer sandpaper, with the last sanding being maded with 320 grit paper. Vacuum away all the dust, as specks of dust under the covering will leave undesirable bumps. Fill gaps and dents with a high-quality filler. If using light-colored UltraCote® (such as white or yellow), use a tan-colored filler that matches the wood color to avoid the filler from revealing through.

Pro Suggestion - Some professional home builders “raise the grain” then sand a 2nd time with 320 or 400 grit paper for the supreme surface. After the design is sanded, use a damp cloth to clean down the design. Some modelers prefer to use a fine-mist squirt bottle filled with water to dampen the surface areas to be covered. As the surface area dries, anchored wood fibers in the surface area will “stand up.” When dry, sand the surface areas again using 320 or 400 grit paper. Raising the grain now and sanding it off will avoid the grain from raising later under the covering, creating a rough surface. Vacuum the design thoroughly and prevent touching the design with oily hands.Your design is now all set for covering!

Trim Movie to Size:

Start by covering the bottom of one wing half. Using scissors or sharp hobby knife, cut a piece of UltraCote® a couple of inches bigger than needed to cover the wing. Get rid of the support (conserve for later) and put the covering with the adhesive (dull) side down, centered over the wing. Set the covering iron to the application temperature of 220°F.

Pro Suggestion - If the iron you're using does not display the actual temperature, here is an idea that will guarantee your iron is properly set.Water boils at 212°F. Enable your iron to heat up at a medium setting. When the iron reaches its stabilized temperature, carefully put a couple of drops of water on the iron's surface area. Adjust the temperature until the water just starts to boil off. This technique is surprisingly accurate and is usually within 10° (of the precise application temperature of 220).

Tacking Covering to Spar:

Tack the covering to the spar or the high point of the wing, using your iron as revealed (an iron sock is extremely recommened). Carefully pull the covering toward the root and toward the suggestion, as you work the iron from the center of the spar to the root and suggestion of the wing. Press gently with the iron, allowing the heat (not pressure) to activate the adhesive and bond the covering to the high point. Ideally, the covering will naturally lay flat versus the whole surface area with a minimum of wrinkles.

Covering a Solid-Sheeted Wing:

If covering a solid-sheeted wing, work from the center of the spar outside to the tracking edge then to the leading edge as revealed, using the iron at 220°F. If a wrinkle establishes, the covering can be carefully lifted and reapplied.

Covering an Open-Structure Wing:

If covering an open-structure wing, work from the spar toward the tracking edge, gently moving the iron (set at 220°) toward the tracking edge with the iron getting in touch with two ribs. Using your iron, adhere the covering to the remaining ribs, working toward the suggestion and the root. Now finish the open structure leading edge, using the same technique. If the leading edge is sheeted, then follow the technique noted above under “Covering a Solid-Sheeted Wing.”

Sealing the Edges:

With the iron set to 220°F, seal the leading and tracking edges. Using a straight edge and a sharp #11 hobby knife, carefully trim the excess covering from the leading and tracking edge, allowing a minimum of a 1/4" overlap to twist around the leading and tracking edge of the wing. Now seal the leading and tracking edges safely with the covering iron.

Wing Suggestion:

Depending on the amount of the curvature of the wing suggestion, high heat (up to 350°F) may be needed to shrink and stretch the covering to eliminate all the wrinkles. Preset the iron to 300°F. Pull and stretch the covering around the wing suggestion while applying heat with the iron. Keep in mind, UltraCote® can be carefully lifted and repositioned to help eliminate wrinkles. This function is helpful, specifically when covering sharply curved wing ideas. Continue working, pulling, and heating up the covering around the suggestion until the covering is past the center of the suggestion. It may be necessary to increase the temperature of the iron to accomplish greater shrinking to eliminate all wrinkles. Cut the excess covering using a #11 hobby knife, then reseal the covering on the wing suggestion.

Pro Suggestion - If sealing the covering in tight locations such as corners or fillets, using the Hanger 9 ProTrim Sealing To
